Merriam-Webster’s Everyday Language Reference Set (2016)

This inexpensive set includes a serviceable dictionary, thesaurus, and the Merriam-Webster Vocabulary Builder. Although I don’t require it for writing tutorials, I recommend the Vocabulary Builder as a cost-effective vocabulary textbook for middle school and up.

The Oxford Essential Guide to Writing by Thomas S. Kane

This affordable guide offers a thorough and well-organized discussion of the writing process for students who want to improve their writing skills.

Elementary Writing Instruction

I recommend the following books as background reading for homeschooling parents with questions about writing instruction and how it fits into a content-rich curriculum. These titles are geared toward the elementary grades but explain the fundamentals of good writing instruction clearly.

The Writing Revolution by Judith C. Hochman and Natalie Wexler
